Excitement as Nkumba Primary School Alumni organize first ever sports gala

The old students of Nkumba Primary School through the alumni body organized a successful sports gala at Nkumba University main playground on Saturday, 12th April 2025.

Braving the heavy rains and chilly weather conditions, the old students fulfilled a mission and set a precedent that will be followed to the dot in the coming years.

It was an opportune moment for the old students from the different age groups to associate once again as they rekindle the golden old memories, reflect about the present and future times, smile together and play for fun in the various games.

The games involved entailed football, running, netball, tug-of-war, sack race, egg on spoon race, ring throwing competition, blind-fold walk race and Kwepena.

As early as 7 am, the old students led by the legendary 1952 class student Flavia Ssewaggudde reported to the Nkumba university playground, with vigor basking in joy ready for the games.

Kick-off for the football games was delayed by a four-hour heavy downpour before action unfolded under the rains as the day’s Master of Ceremony Omulangira Ndawusi called the house to order.

In the very first game, the famous class of 1990 led by former Uganda Cranes and KCCA player Noordin Juuko fell 0-5 to the 1992-2000 cluster.

Tom Kasule notched a hat-trick and Patrick Kagimu had a brace for the triumphant 1992-2000 team who also won the overall football title.

Class of 2001-2005 held 1991-1994 to a 2-all stalemate. Julius Ssenankya scored twice for the 2001-2005 whilst Festo Obonyo and Arafat Bamweyana had the two goals for the 1991-1994 class.

The football competition was won by the 1991-1994 class after defeating 2000-2008 class 1-0 in the final, courtesy of Ronnie Muganzi’s solitary strike.

The champions were rewarded with gold medals, a trophy and a goat as the runners up got silver medals.

 

Other games:

Netball was one other game that was played with a duel between the current Nkumba primary school netball team and the old students.

The young and energetic Nkumba primary school netballers won the contest 4-1.

There was excitement with the egg on spoon competition won by Prossy Nakawombe and Fred Balondemu.

Arafat Kawenyera (1994 class) won the enticing sack race for the men as Namiiro (1998) clinched the female category.

Other games included the tug-of-war (competed among the different teams), ring throwing, chair dance, blind-fold walking and Kwepena for the females.

The old students flashed back about the old memories at the school that dates back the founding year of 1952.

A decent luncheon was served for all, with plenty of drinks before a cake was cut and shared.

There were a couple of speeches from the organizing committee members and the representative of the Parents-Teachers-Association (PTA) board Simon Musoke.

Linda Suzan Aketch Bugembe, the president of the Nkumba Primary School alumni body had her speech delivered by Patrick Ssemujju, the chairperson of the local organizing committee.

“I thank you all for gracing the first ever sports gala organized by the Nkumba primary school alumni. Let us remain united and focused for the good of our school that gave us the firm foundation in life. This will be an annual event” Aketch’s message spelt in part.

Certificates of recognition were awarded to the organizing committee members of the alumni body, exceptional members as well as the famous Ssempa and Nakasumba families.

By dawn, the euphoria was just building up and departure was at leisure.

Till April 2026 for next Nkumba University Alumni sports gala, the preparations for a bigger event start now.
